Today I make the final measurements of the complete receiver part of my transverter. In the transverter I use a low phase noise Abracom VCXO for the 27 MHz LNB reference. This reference is locked into a 10 MHz reference at GPS. With the 27 MHz LNB reference, the local oscillator is 9750 MHz. The satellite will be received at 739.6 MHz, so a second oscillator mixed the signal to 432.6 MHz.

The signal generator is a SML-01 from R&S and the timebase is locked to my spectrum analyser time base. The maximum frequency is 1100 MHz.
When the generator is set at 953.6 MHz, the 11the harmonic is at 10489.6 MHz. A shottky diode make the harmonic signal.

This signal is received by a Octagon Oslo LNB, with external 27 MHz reference. That give a output of 739.6 MHz and later down converted to 432.6 MHz, and give a clear signal. With the spectrum analyser we see a clean carrier, however, you see the groudloop in my measurement-system and give a 50 Hz hum. Normal there is no ground-loop and no hum.

This picture is a spectrum analyser view in a 100 Hz span, so 10Hz a division. You see a clear carrier with about 60dB above the noise floor.

The schematic of the down converter part. This is included the LNB reference oscillator ans 5V low noise power supply for the LNB.

Nach dem erfolgreichen Start von Es’hail-2 wird am 14. Februar 2019 der neue Teleport von Es’hailSat feierlich eingeweiht.

Dies soll auch zum Anlass genommen werden die beiden Amateurfunk-Transponder von Qatar OSCAR-100,
dem ersten geostationären P4-A Satelliten aus Qatar, offiziell in Betrieb zu nehmen.
Die Eröffnungszeremonie erfolgt durch seine Exzellenz Abdullah bin Hamad Al Attiyah,
dem ehemaligen stellvertretenden Ministerpräsidenten von Qatar.
A71AU ist auch der Vorsitzende der Qatar Amateur Radio Society (QARS) und Initiator des ersten katarischen Amateurfunksatelliten.

Eine Truppe des P4-A Teams der AMSAT-DL, bestehend aus dem Vorsitzenden Peter Gülzow DB2OS,
Achim Vollhardt DH2VA und Thomas Kleffel DG5NGI, ist auf dem Weg nach Katar um das P4-A Bodensegment
an der Bodenstation von Es’hailSat aufzubauen und in Betrieb zu nehmen.
Dies beinhaltet neben LEILA und dem DVB-S2 DATV System, auch eine Klubstation für SSB Funkbetrieb unter dem Rufzeichen A71A.
Eine Backupstation wird bei der QARS in Doha installiert. Die Bodenstation der AMSAT-DL an der Sternwarte Bochum
ist ebenfalls empfangs- und sendebereit.
Hier soll später unter dem Rufzeichen DL50AMSAT auch Funkbetrieb über Qatar-OSCAR 100 durchgeführt werden.

Erst nach der offiziellen Freigabezeremonie am 14. Februar werden die Transponder für den allgemeinen Funkbetrieb
durch Funkamateure weltweit freigegeben.

Während der Inbetriebnahme bitten wir ausdrücklich darum von jeglichen Sendeversuchen abzusehen!

Es werden sowohl vom SCC in Qatar, als auch von Bochum in Deutschland, einige Tests durchgeführt um beide
Transponder durchzumessen und die Bodenanlagen zu kalibrieren.

Bitte beachten Sie hierzu auch die Aussendungen der Baken im NB Transponder.
Auf der DATV-Bake des WB Transponder wird am Eröffnungstag ein Video von Es’hail-2 in einer
Endlosschleife im DVB-S2 Format abgestrahlt.

Weiterhin wird dringend auf die Spielregeln hingewiesen, wie sie unter den Operating Guidelines für den NB-Transponder
und WB-Transponder formuliert sind. Bitte beim NB-Transponder die Bandgrenzen einhalten,
wie sie durch die obere und untere Bake vorgeben sind!
Eine spätere Anpassung und mögliche Erweiterung nach oben wird eventuell nach ersten Experimenten erwägt.



Following the successful launch of Es'hail-2, the new Es'hailSat teleport will be inaugurated on 14 February 2019.

Please also note the beacons sent in the NB transponder. On the DATV beacon of the WB Transponder a video of Es'hail-2 will be broadcast in an endless loop in DVB-S2 format on the opening day.

Furthermore, the rules of the game, as defined in the Operating Guidelines for the NB transponder and WB transponder are formulated. Please observe the band boundaries of the NB transponder as defined by the upper and lower beacon! A later adaptation and possible extension upwards may be considered after first experiments.



Again: Please no uplink attempts until the official release of the transponders by QARS!

Modification of an Octagon Oslo LNB.
When I opened the LNB and looked at the poor datasheet, I make a plan for conversion.
The IC, with PLL and 9.750 Ghz oscillator is fed from a 7805 voltage regulator IC.
These ICs are known for the high supply noise, and if you want to make a bad oscillator, use this IC for the power supply.
A circuit to eliminate the noise does wonders, and 10 to 20dB better phase noise is possible. So I have not only looked at an external 27 MHz reference source, the power supply has also been made low-noise. Because I only use the LNB for 1 polarization, I have removed the power supply from the LNB and placed it in the second converter, in addition to the 27 MHz reference oscillator. On the space where the voltage regulator used to be, I soldered a parallel circuit. A passage for DC, and a barrier for 27 MHz. A series circuit towards the reference oscillator input from the input. So this is a bandpass filter.
Removing the crystal is very difficult, and the chance that the print is damaged very large, but then I saw that series of resistor. Now I leave the crystal and remove only that little resistor.
There you can enter your reference in 2 ways. Pin 19 is the low sensitive input. (-7 +10 dBm) or on pin 20 the high sensitive input (-33 to 0 dBm). If you choose for pin 20, you can use the crystal as an extra filter, so go to the other pin of that resistor. But I think that it picks up interference more easily.
After the LNB has been modified, I have taken measurements. For this I have connected both the measuring instruments and the down converter (with LNB) to the same 10 MHz reference.
As a generator an SML-01 at 953.6 GHz, shottky diode as a multiplier. Converter is homebuilt, and the analyzer is an FSEA with low noise option.
Phase noise measured from the whole system is
10Hz distance -54dBc / Hz
100Hz distance -61dBc / Hz
1k distance -74 to -78 dBc / Hz

If I look at other reports about the LNB conversion, I am on average 6dB better quasi-phase noise, presumably due to the low-noise power supply.

I heard that the Octagon Oslo is out of production ?

Today I received a other LNB, normal stock product.
It is possible to change the LNB easily. It is the Inverto Home pro 40mm LNB and costs about 13 euro (ex VAT)

I make a description later.

Here the Dutch version of the new LNB modification, note, I change also the 5V powersupply to a lownoise 5V external. Is give about 5 to 6dB better phase noise.

Dualband antenna.

Remco PA3FYM has make a dualband antenna. This is a Circulair polarized patch antenna for 2.4 GHz, and with the waveguide in the centre also a feeder for the LNB. With this antenna it is possible to transmit and receive at the same time at the same antenna.
Also to make simplex contacts.

Here the antenna. I found a plastic cover to make the antenna waterproof.
